Since it was launched three years ago, the RUS Copernicus service has been supporting large communities in education programs targeted to Sentinel users from the academic world. In fact, another important component of our service consists in sustaining training activities organized by universities, research institutes or engineering schools, among others.
This includes the allocation of free Virtual Machines fully equipped with open-source processing tools and software, uploaded with standard webinars or specifically designed training kits and datasets, but also the support of the RUS ICT team. Trainees indeed benefit from the VMs and the full assistance of our ICT experts who prepare and configure the RUS VMs before the courses and monitor them during the agreed period of practicing to provide help and back up if needed.
The main objective, for these students, is to conduct, under the supervision of their teachers, processing exercises on much more powerful machines than their simple laptops, and learn to use the processing tools to be completely autonomous in their future projects related to Earth observation.
As a starting point, RUS Copernicus also provides them with material for capacity building covering a large portfolio of applications, on topics as various as Agriculture, Hazard assessment, Earthquakes, Land monitoring, Ocean monitoring, Climate change…
The RUS service is financed by the European Commission, managed by the European Space Agency, and is operated by a European consortium of industrial companies.
